Tohorā is the legacy project of the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge. It’s a free AI-assisted search tool that rapidly summarises the Challenge’s research and harnesses the findings of over 100 research projects over 10 years throughout Aotearoa. These findings come from 450 ecologists, experts in mātauranga Māori, economists, lawyers, social scientists and practitioners.
The Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge, a 10-year research programme, represents Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest ever group of biophysical and social scientists, economists, and experts in mātauranga Māori and policy. The research of the Challenge focused on improving the health of our marine environment while providing benefits for all New Zealanders through improved decision-making using ecosystem-based management, enhancing a prosperous blue economy, and empowering mana moana.
The final two years of the research decade focussed on synthesising the knowledge generated into accessible outputs. Tohorā provides a deep dive into the Challenge and enables users to search the knowledge generated by the Challenge across the breadth of EBM, te ao Māori, and the blue economy approaches. The tool assists with navigating the research and pulls together the key messages and recommendations of the Challenge.
Tohorā was developed as a free search tool to access and explore the latest marine guidance and research – over 100 research summaries from the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge. It is an assistant, supporting decision-makers, iwi, business owners, community groups, and those in the education sector.
