The Committee supports domestic activities, acts as a link between national and international activities and engages stakeholders with the Decade. The Committee contributed to the Decade's virtual Ocean Laboratories series and aligns projects from Aotearoa and the Pacific with endorsed Decade Programmes. The Committee also works with the Pacific Ocean Science Regional Hub and is a member of the newly established Pacific Islands Decade Collaborative Centre.
The New Zealand Reference Group on the Decade of Ocean Science was established in October 2020 to advise on New Zealand’s contribution to the Decade and to connect the National Commission to relevant networks. In July 2021, the Reference Group was reconstituted as the Aotearoa New Zealand National Decade Committee and officially registered with the Decade.
Embracing and empowering multiple knowledges, disciplines, and sectors through an ocean kinship approach to the Decade.
MŌHIOTANGA - Raising Awareness
MĀTAURANGA - Showcasing Knowledge
HONONGA - Promoting Connections
We have youth and wisdom, with multidisciplinary membership that includes scientists, indigenous knowledge holders, government interests, NGOs and early career professionals.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, ocean science draws from many knowledges and practices including values and world views of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand and the Pacific. Weaving these knowledge systems into our contribution to the Decade has generated a distinctive multidisciplinary approach to our work.
